Weird Fishes [Jul. 16th, 2009|01:15 pm]

warren_ellis

Jamaica Dyer’s wonderful new graphic novel is almost here. Pre-order it at this link direct from the publisher. Read a bunch of her work here. I wrote a quote for it:

The only explanation for Jamaica Dyer is that she was built by aliens and dropped here to show us all how crap we are compared to her.

This pleases me.

I have no more codein. This is a strange development for me. And as of Monday, I'm going sober. Drinking has now become a thing that's done by force of habit, rather than as something I'm doing because it's an event, or because it's fun. It's a bugger when you know yourself well enough to see when things are becoming a problem, rather than waking up one day in Tijuana without your pants going "Where did my week go? And I started drinking in ICELAND!!" Although I must admit, the kind of bender that would have me waking up in Tijuana without my pants would be pretty fucking Epic and something to tell the grand-nephews about. I told Gwilym about it and he's said that he'll do a week of sobriety with me, which is a good idea because we're spending more money than we should on booze each and barely feeling it. After a week, I'll see how it goes from there. I think 2 weeks will be my limit though. And Shaun's going to have to find someone else to have shots in the middle of the shift with, which will suck, because that seems to be our wee ritual and I rather enjoy it.

Look at all my trials and tribulaaaations...sinking in a gentle pool of wine...

More later, but for now, bed. I got a whacking great 3 hour's sleep before being woken up by hammering from the neighbours. Rrrrrrrrrr.

Your July PLANETARY #27 Update [Jul. 16th, 2009|09:00 am]

warren_ellis

I’ve now seen the complete lettered book. I’m told it’s scheduled for release in October.

I’ve mentioned that there’s extra pages in this one, right? It’s a longer-than-normal episode?

A new Kemper Norton EP, available for free download. Probably best classified as Night Music, so grab it down and play it later (unless you’re on the other side of the world, of course, in which case, download the bugger).

Massively, spooktronically atmospheric. Very good.

And that’s my longtime friend, translator/writer/model Cristina, whom I owe about three emails to, so I’m doing this instead. Good morning. I’m off to the pub.

Hey guys, multiple motives for this one.

For you -- I have a mostly full packet of Red Baron Rooibos from T-Leaf. I've used less than ten teaspoons; I like it, but not quite enough that I'm actually drinking it when I have my three preferred teas available. I'd like to see it go to a nice home. Ping me here with your email and it's yours, first in first serve.

For me -- I need old copies of Pet Magazine for an assignment. Does anyone happen to have any lying around that they're willing to part with? I'll hit the library too, but it would be nice to have some in my personal possession.

Also for you -- I don't know if anyone is doing that Combo to Dubai deal that Burgerfuel has going on at the moment, but if someone wants an extra 2000 points I got them tonight and have no need for them.

demelza is the best dealer. already 200 pages through the first succubus book and totally hooked. hurrah!

one of the coolest things about today was possibly getting my sticky lil mitts on the morticians guidelines. halleluyah! i love my job. =)

is anyone looking for a flat? two rooms going at Torrens Terrace if anyone is interested or knows anyone interested? $156.25 per room, good sizes, big flat. its really central, with code access, and lovely flatmates. also a shared internal deck for smoking. literally 2 minutes from hell pizza and cuba street. i strongly recommend. =)

The painter man came this morning. The chem dry guy came this afternoon and removed the last of his gear, confirming that all is well in the attic. All that remains at this point is an external patch to the roof, the painting and replacing the blinds :) Soon my house will be tidy and placid again, rather than a work in progress.

Last night was a bit pants. In that we got trounced. In that we had every bastard and his dog show up and for a couple of hours we were being reamed like a cheerleader in a frat house. And I dropped an entire tray of pilsner glasses and had a krystalnacht* behind the bar, right when things were at their busiest. AND I WAS SOBER. This is why I don't work sober. Physics works differently when I have blood in my alcohol stream. Tonight is Ghostplane's first gig in three years and it's going to be a good one. The last time I saw them, they were on stage with OdESSA and Lady Luck, and it was an absolute cracker of a gig. so I'm hoping for something similar...

Also, I'm in a holding pattern and I'm bored. I've got my nice job what I love, my nice house and my nice flatmates, but there's no challenge. Maybe I'll take up another language or something to keep me occupied. Stability is nice because it means that nothing's breaking, but there's no fight and no fire in everyday life. *sigh*

*Or however the hell you spell it

Hi guys,  I joined in order to ask these questions of you.  I'm relatively new to Wellington; been here about 5/6 months.  I'm from Auckland (which really, is pretty awesome and I'm kinda sick of people saying they "won't hold it against [me]") but I love it here!
Basically my questions are as follows:
Where can I get a good second hand sewing machine for a beginner such as myself that isn't trademe.  I want to be able to look and ask questions and whatnot and make a choice out of a few at hand.  I've had advice that I sould buy a cheap new one instead, which I'm fully prepared to do, but if there's somewhere to buy second hand that is respectable, than I'd prefer that, just for the sake of budget. Oh, preferably in Wellington but the hutt is okay too if it's good.

ALSO where are some good cheap second hand clothing stores?  Like the Salvation Army, and other cheap stuff where I can get old clothes to fuck with and make my own - and maybe some cheap fabric stores too?

I really appreciate any help.  I have a fire under my ass and I MUST SEW!  Check out threadbanger how to videos on youtube - they really got me going and I just have to create.  Cheers.

Because we're a nation of deviants!

The press release from the Department of Internal Affairs.

FAQ about it, compiled by [info]beagl who is the most informed person I know on this topic.

What concerns me about this is the secrecy in which the whole thing has been undertaken and the potential for slippage. New Zealand's government process is considered to by fairly transparent, but this hasn't been. I think everyone agrees that child pornography is objectionable, but I've looked up the law governing what's considered objectionable, and there's loads of scope for other things to end up being included in the list of banned sites - Kink (NSFW), for example - under the same secrecy. How would we know?

I am also left wondering about any action potentially being taken to remove the sites altogether. Read the comment from Sabine Miehlbradt on the Register's article about this. It's thought provoking.

Anyway, I'm going to let people read the three links and decide for themselves rather than ram my opinion down your throat - it's an emotive issue. I just wanted to make it a bit more public than it has been, because that's how it should have been in the first place.

[mood | bouncy]

Hey folks,

Fiend Magazine Issue #18 - The Steampunk Issue is now available instore @ Wildilocks & now online from our webstore too! Tons of awesome stuff and of course, featuring a variety of articles on various aspects of Steampunk, including an interview with Doctor Steel, our very own The Tenth Stage, the delectable Kate O'Brien's lush and steamy photography, and simply lashings of Steampunk fashion!

What we're really pleased and excited about though, is a collaboration for the first time between Wildilocks and Fiend, as we present the inaugural Fiend Exclusive Wildilocks Treats how-to article, "Steampunk Glamour" - the full text is solely available in Fiend while issue #18 is current. For a taste, see our accompanying how-to videos on youtube here - or view the whole series embedded @ Wildilocks Treats... and if you would like the accompanying written instructions & stunning finished pics, grab yourself a copy of Fiend, pronto! Being Steampunk focused, I won't be at all surprised if this issue sells out fast.

Cheers,

Cass

Okay, the word got out a while ago, and I’m being drowned in emails tonight, so let’s get this done. By the power of contractual obligation, I am appearing at the San Diego Comic-Con 2009 under the exclusive aegis of Sony, Madhouse and Marvel Anime. I am in San Diego for something less than 36 hours. This is my only appearance at San Diego. Here’s the press release.

Apologies for fall through [Jul. 16th, 2009|11:55 am]

Hey people who asked for Jetpilot t-shirts and things.

I've had to assess my finances a little, and also consider the likelihood of my contracts ending soon. Also there's the fact that the shirts and things are a lot more expensive in $NZ than $AUS, and I'd basically be paying full RRP anyway. Thus I apologise in my decision to hang on to the cash, perhaps when I feel a bit more flush I'll make an order - but there's no particular reason to do it now since I'm not getting a discount at all (*grumps*).

Sorry! Hate to renege on an offer. ;-(

On the plus side, a new DJ mix is in the works and should be completed soon.

Shipping Broken [Jul. 15th, 2009|04:01 pm]

As a coda to the previous post, Jamais Cascio notes how the touchscreen generation interacts with a Kindle:

They try to "turn the page" by flicking a finger across the screen. But the Kindle doesn’t have a touch screen….Which means that the second thing that people checking out my Kindle do is get a funny confused look — why doesn’t it work?…

I did exactly the same thing the first time I handled one, funnily enough. I’m not iPhone-entrained, I’m Palm-entrained…

I had a plan for my day, and this wasn't it [Jul. 16th, 2009|10:03 am]

[mood |frazzled]

Having stayed last night at Will's, I arrived at work this morning to get a text from the painter, wanting to come around to my house at 10. I was trying to sort that out when I got waylaid by a colleague in town from our Chch office needing a computer with a SAS licence (they're tied to the hardware rather than the network ID). My current work is portable and does not require SAS, so I offered him my desk for the day, got him settled in, and headed back to my house. At least I have the opportunity to make coffee...

I have chewy comments from Peter that are taking up most of my brain, overdue projects at work, social obligations that I am looking forward to but regretting the timing of, and the universe continues to chop my days into bitsy pieces that make it difficult to complete things. I'm not sure what the lesson is there, and I don't feel like I have time to look for it.
